Closely related invasive species may be controlled by the same demographic life stages

چکیده

Invasive species that are closely related to each other may have similar population dynamics and, therefore, be controlled by targeting life stages. We studied two invasive knapweed species, spotted (Centaurea stoebe subsp. micranthos) and the hybrid meadow complex ( Centaurea × moncktonii ) in New York, USA, determine their individual growth rates (λ) across several sites over three years. Both had were greater than 1 (spotted λ ranged from 1.005–1.440; 1.541–2.408), but there was high variability between years sites. One study of composed primarily individuals black ancestry C. nigra ), a that, while introduced, is not invasive. For this population, projected stable (λ approximately 1). Elasticity analysis showed flowering-to-flowering stage contributed most rate for six seven additional transitions also influential four knapweed: seedling-to-vegetative stage, vegetative-to-flowering flowering-to-seedling stage. simulated how increasing vital would affect found both followed same pattern. The established seedlings maturing flowering plants greatest effect on growth, survival new seedlings. In all cases, responses non-linear, with small initial changes having large effect. Increases later stages tended positive rate, effects more modest. Although sensitivity indicated early largest these practical management. Rather, reducing older or delaying maturation vegetative effective. similarity contributes provides support protocols developed one should effective caveat any biological control agent directly tested target before being utilised.

Complex genetic patterns in closely related colonizing invasive species

Anthropogenic activities frequently result in both rapidly changing environments and translocation of species from their native ranges (i.e., biological invasions). Empirical studies suggest that many factors associated with these changes can lead to complex genetic patterns, particularly among invasive populations. However, genetic complexities and factors responsible for them remain uncharact...

Life Will Never Be the Same

It seems appropriate that the Cold Spring Harbor Genome Sequencing and Biology Meeting, which witnessed the creation of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) in 1988, should this year present three major advances in genomic science: the completion of the ®nished sequence of Drosophila melanogaster; the announcement that 85% of the genome of Homo sapiens is now in draft sequence; and the complete...

Listen Too Closely and You May Be Confused

Among the most basic simplifying assumptions of modern communications security is the notion that most communication channels should, by their very nature, be considered vulnerable to interception. It has long been considered almost reckless to suggest depending on any supposed intrinsic security properties of the network itself1, and especially foolish in complex, decentralized, heterogeneousl...

The effect of historical legacy on adaptation: do closely related species respond to the environment in the same way?

The many documented examples of parallel and convergent evolution in similar environments are strong evidence for the role of natural selection in the evolution of trait variation. However, species may respond to selection in different ways; idiosyncrasies of their evolutionary history may affect how different species respond to the same selective pressure. To determine whether evolutionary his...
